Using the Media Center

We are proud of the Media Center at Batchelor. The purpose of the media center is to support the Batchelor school mission statement. The Media Center operates with as few rules as possible. However, the ones we do have are important. Below are some things you should know:

How should students behave in the Media Center?

  • The Media Center is another classroom in our school.
  • Students should come to the Media Center to read or study.
  • Behave in ways that help learning happen. Quiet voices and respect for others are important behaviors.
  • Use the library media center books, equipment, and computers with care.
  • Learn skills for using the media center.
  • Be self-motivated. Stay focused on your school work.
  • Leave no messes. Push in chairs, pick up trash, put books away or stack them on the table.

Please do not cut through the media center. Thank you.

  • Reduce distraction and interruption for those students working in the media center:
  • Enter the media center to use the books and computers.
  • The library media center is a classroom not a hallway.
  • Please walk in the halls to get to class or to lunch.
What does the Library Media Center have?

Students and teachers may use books, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias in books and on computers, a computer library catalog, Internet access, atlases, almanacs, digital cameras, scanners, video cameras, cd players, books on tape and audio cassette players, and a wide variety of computer software installed on the Batchelor computer network.
When may I come to the Media Center?

You may come to the Media Center before or after school (7:40-8:00 am and 2:30- 2:40 pm). Before school you must have a pass signed by your teacher. Plan ahead.

During school hours when you come to the media center from a class, you should have a pass. When you leave, return to your classroom. Librarians will not write tardy passes.

During lunch time you may come to the Media Center, however, you MUST get a pass from a teacher or a librarian before your lunch period begins. Before leaving the cafeteria, please show your pass to a cafeteria supervisor. If you come up you MUST stay until the end of the lunch period.

Students are to enter by the middle doors only (under the clocks). Only teachers are to use the doors at the corners.
How do I check out materials?

Take your selections to the circulation desk. Tell the desk assistant your first and last name in a clear voice. Students assume responsibility for materials checked out.

You may borrow 3 books at a time. If you need more than three books at a time, please ask a librarian.

Books check out for 3 weeks, and it is a good idea to return them as soon as you are through with them. The date your book is due will be stamped on the date slip by the desk attendant. Three books for three weeks!

Books may be renewed for an additional 3 week period as long as you are still using them. On or before the due date stamped in the book, please bring the books to the Media Center to be renewed in the computer and stamped again.

All materials must be checked out before you leave the Media Center.

Do not check out books for a friend. You are still responsible for materials you checked out. Let your friend check out materials after you return them.
May I use reference materials and magazines?

Magazines and reference materials may be checked out overnight, and are due the next school day by 8:00 a.m. They may be returned in the Media Center return slot or dropped in the brown metal book return in the 3rd floor lobby.

May I use computers in the Media Center?
Computers at Batchelor may be used for school purposes only. That means that you have teacher permission and a teacher is supervising your work. It also means that you are using the computer to do only what you have been assigned to do. Know how many pages you print, and know which printer you selected.
What if I have an overdue book? What if I lose a book?

Students with overdue books will be asked to return these materials before checking out more materials from the Media Center.

If you have a problem with overdue, missing, or damaged books, please talk to the librarian about it. We want you to continue responsible use of library media center materials even if you have lost a book.
YOUR HELP MAKES THE MEDIA CENTER A GREAT LEARNING PLACE!
