Batchelor Middle School 8th Grade General Music Assignment instructions - Jazz Musician report

     This report must be on the life of a jazz musician. If you wish to research a rock, country, or classical musician, you may do so but this assignment is to be about a jazz musician.

    You may select a jazz musician from the lists provided. If you want to do someone not on the list, see me for approval.

    You will be allowed several days (at least 4) in the media center to research and write your report. If you need more time, you must do the remainder of the work on your own time.

    Requirements for an "A" grade:

•     The report needs to be neatly written in ink or typed.
•     The report should have a title page with the name of the subject and your name clearly visible.
•     The report should be at least two pages (single-spaced). Do include a page showing your notes and another page showing your sources (bibliography).
• If you have sources from the Internet, list all of them-the web site, address, etc. Sources from book, magazines, reference books, etc, must indicate volume #, pages, date of issue, etc.

Good sources of information include the usual, i.e. books, magazines, Internet, encyclopedia, and so on. However, don’t forget to check out personal interviews, record/tape/CD printed information, the public library, and the IU library, if possible.

For extra credit, you may bring a record, tape, CD, or video of the artist. We will play one selection for the class so we can all enjoy the music of the jazz musician you wrote about.

I will read selected reports to the class-names not announced unless that is OK with the writer.

These reports are due on:

• One grade penalty per day late. Fair consideration will be given for deserving situations.
• The grade given for your report includes the report itself as explained above, AND the work you did preparing for the report in the media center. A very poor report, or no report at all, means your grade will include an "F" for the report and an "F" for each day you wasted in the media center. This will count as about one-half of the grade for this class.

Most reports turned in are just fine. Also, most students seem to enjoy learning about the lives of these very interesting people.
